Understanding Acetylene Welding Equipment and Fuels
The chemical compound, Acetylene, is a colorless gas. It is a hydrocarbon and simple alkyne that is used as a chemical building block and for fuel.
Acetylene and Oxygen are used for welding and cutting in gas welders. These welders are also known as oxy-fuel welders. They are used for fabrication and welding and cutting metals in the manufacturing and jewelry industry. They are used to cut and weld pipes in the oil and gas industries. They are also used for polishing in the glass industry, and . You may even see an oxy fuel welder being used in stone work, a technique referred to as flaming.
Acetylene welding is also referred to as Oxy fuel welding or oxy welding. It is even said to be one of the oldest forms of welding in existence. This type of welding operates the same as any type of welding. Once you apply the heat to the source a puddle of melted metal will form and allow you to place another piece there. As the melted metal dries, it bonds to the additional piece you place on. How much heat you apply will ultimately depend on the type of project you are working on and the tip will determine the flame size.
Since no electicity is needed, these type welders can be used in remote locations where no electricity is available.
Acetylene torches are versatile. They can be used for bending, annealing, tempering, burning and cutting metals, loosening rusted bolts and nuts, welding, brazing and much more. They are an imperative addition to any metal working or repair shop.
One disadvantage of using Acetylene is that the lines is creates while welding are very rough looking, and they have a huge area that is affected by the heat. This may sometimes cause warping of the material being welded.
However, there are many more advantages to Acetylene welding than disadvantages. The skill is extremely easy to learn by users of all experience levels. The equipment used with this type of welding is less expensive than other welding forms. If you do a lot of on the road work these welders are perfect because of their portability.
Acetylene requires two tanks (one for Acetylene and one for oxygen), two pressure regulators, and two hoses. The fuel hoses are red and the oxygen hoses are green. To prevent the hoses from being attached to the wrong tanks, they have different threads, ie left and right hand. The torch head for cutting metals has an oxygen blast trigger which supplies oxygen to the cutting flame. The blow out trigger is not necessary for a torch head for welding.
Pressure in acetylene tanks is about 250 psi when full. When mixed with oxygen it burns at a temperature from 5800 to 6300 degrees Fahrenheit.
Googles or face shields with shaded lenses must be used when welding to protect eyes from sparks and flying metal. Gloves made for welding use are also a necessity. Always have a fire extinguisher handy when welding.
